At 5pm on 14th February at the Ha-khaseb Community Hall in Usakos, over 60 young people participated in the Usakos Valentine’s Day Spectacular.
Organised by OYO Erongo regional office — with help from the Usakos DAC office and the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture — the event revolved around the theme of Love and Responsibility. “What we tried to do is get people to think about what it means to be responsible when you are in a loving relationship,” commented OYO regional head, Lesly !Aibeb. “If people loved in a responsible way then we wouldn’t hear about social issues like teenage pregnancy, rape, domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse and HIV and AIDS of course.”
The Spectacular involved a wide variety of arts including music and theatre. In addition to songs from the Usakos Junior Secondary School Choir and Dramas from the Usakos Junior Secondary School AIDS Awareness Club, a public showing was also given of the new OYO DVD, Five minutes of pleasure. The film, shot in 2007, explores two cases of teenage pregnancy and in so doing illuminates several important issues related to love and responsibility.
By holding their first event of the year in Usakos, OYO’s Erongo regional team hope to draw attention to their new Usakos office located in the Ministry of Youth Premises. The office will serve as the base for all OYO activities in inland Erongo.
